About Drew
I am a psychological counsellor, registered with the HPCSA. I hold a masters degree in the relatively new but ever expanding field of positive psychology. Outside of my profession as a psycholgical practitioner, I find joy in classical guitar playing, surfing, body-surfing, mindful swimming training, cooking, appreciating and interacting with the beauty in nature through simple activities like gardening. I also love watching rugby and appreciating the skill involved in other sporting activities.
Therapeutic Approach
My therapeutic approach is based on bringing together elements from both positive psychology and humanistic psychology. Positive psychology is a strengths-based approach which sees the focus more on what is right with a person than what is wrong. Humanistic psychology likewise stresses that which is inherently good in human behaviour. This is certainly not to say that a ‘pollyanna-ish’ stance is taken to any problem or dysfunction that arises. The inextricable connection or dance between positive and negative and acceptance thereof is key to understanding and promoting emotional and overall well-being. The core elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) are also included in some therapeutic settings to create an awareness behind the self-limiting effects of identification with negative thought patterns.
I use a highly individualised or ‘best-fit’ approach with my clients, knowing that no theoretical approach on its own is ever enough to promote holistic well being and that what is right for one person may be wrong for another. Any dysfunctions reported are never seen in isolation from the context from which it resides, therefore family therapy with the significant other(s) can be extremely effective in restoring crucial relationships. I have a personal interest and daily practice in mindful and awareness training, existential philosophy, person-centred therapy and holistic healing. I acknowledge the importance of my own practice in this regard as it really is as the adage states “the client can only go as far as you have gone yourself”. It would be of no use recommending grounding techniques to an anxious client, for example, that I had merely read about and not self-tested for efficacy during a personal period of anxiety. As a therapist, I believe in walking the road with the client, with the overall aim of the collaborative sessions seeking to help individuals fulfil their potential and maximise their overall well-being.
My Clients
As a private practitioner I am extremely fortunate to have my office based on the Ashton College campus in Ballito, which means that over the years I have become equally adept at working with children, adolescents and adults. I offer family therapy sessions, play therapy, talk therapy and holistic subject choice and career guidance assessments. Online counselling sessions are available for clients residing out of the Ballito area or anybody that would prefer an online medium of communication. Please see My Services to find out more about what my practice offers or Contact Me for an appointment.
